American Idol Grand Finale 2011 - Live Blog

This is it.  The season finale of American Idol for 2011.  At the end of this 2 hour extravaganza, our tenth American Idol will be crowned.

Who will it be?  Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina.  The poll has Scotty with the edge but we all know that the producers have been pimping Lauren since January.

Over 122 million votes were cast last night and more than three quarters of a billion votes have been cast over the entire season.

It's a Tennessee vs North Carolina finale with two country singers going for the title. But before we get to the result, it's performance time.

The top 13 perform together again and sing Born This Way all dressed in white.

Born This Way - Born This Way (Bonus Track Version)

James Durbin gets to perform with Judas Priest and sings Living After Midnight and Breaking the Law.

Next up is a montage of Randy Jackson's "In it to win it" quotes from this season.  He really did say that an awful lot this year didn't he?

Jacob Lusk gets to perform I Smile with Gladys Knight and Kirk Franklin who pays tribute to the recent tornado victims.

I Smile - Hello Fear

Casey Abrams sings Fat Bottom Girls and is joined on stage by Jack Black.  It's pretty woeful.

 Greatest Hits

The ladies of American Idol perform a number of songs including Single Ladies and Crazy in Love with Beyonce.

Crazy In Love - Dangerously In Love

Hayley Reinhart gets to perform Stepping Out With My Baby with the one and only Tony Bennett.

Then it's all about the fans of J Lo and how many of them have had crushes on her since they were young.

TLC then take to the stage to perform a medley of hits.

Scotty McCreery performs Live Like You Were Dying with Tim McGraw.

Live Like You Were Dying - Live Like You Were Dying

What would an Idol finale be without some of those memorable moments from the auditions with the wannabe radio announcer.

Next up, the other half of JLo takes to the stage.  Marc Anthony brings some Latin flavour to the American Idol finale. And what a surprise.  Jennifer Lopez herself joins him to dance up a storm.

Casey and James talk about their shock eliminations.  It's pretty funny.  Until Pia walks up wearing a "most shocking elimination" sash.

The guys then have their chance to prance around the stage. They sing Kiss, She's a Lady, What's New Pussycat, Green Green Grass of Home, Love Me Tonight and Delilah. I'm guessing Tom Jones is about to walk out onto the stage.  And he does.

Kiss - The Very Best of Prince

Is it just me or does Idol just not seem fresh any more. All these old faces singing songs that have practically no relevance to the young audience that is watching.

Both Scotty and Lauren get to gift a car to one of their teachers who have impacted them in life before they're told they can have the keys to any Ford that they want. Sweet.

Lady Gaga gets to perform again on the Idol stage and sings The Edge of Glory.

The Edge of Glory - Born This Way (Bonus Track Version)

The music starts and I'm hopeful that it's Carrie Underwood singing Before He Cheats.  Nope. It's Lauren Alaina.  Thankfully Carrie comes out to show us how it's done.

Before He Cheats - Some Hearts

Beyonce returns to the stage to sing One plus One.

And then it's the big performance of the night. Bono and The Edge sing Rise Above 1 with Reeve Carney, complete with a Spiderman on a wire jumping around the Nokia Theatre.

Steven Tyler sits at a blue illuminated grand piano and plays while he sings his signature song, Dream On.

Results are next!

The Winner of American Idol 2011 is... Scotty McCreery!
